Research

This research shows that there are many gyms around the Sunderland area. I have also done research to see that two of the gyms are open 24hours and the rest are open until late. This is a positive because this gives people time to go to the gym after work or even before work. The gyms that are in Sunderland are quite close together this is a negative on the community’s that doesn’t have a gym nearby, but because the gyms that are close together are so close it could mean that the gyms would be less crowded this could mean that the people who preferred to train by themselves could do this.

This research shows the gyms in gatehead, it shows that there is more gyms around the centre of Gateshead more than around the outside of Gateshead. This is a good thing as there’s more transport to the centre of Gateshead because on the interchange. But this also could cause problems for people who don’t have money for transport.

The gyms in Newcastle are also mainly in the centre, this is great for transportation because it’s easy to get to but may be hard for people to afford it. These gyms are also open until late this is good for people who have work and can go afterwards.

These were the three main places that the colleges voted that they lived so this is why I done research on where the gyms were located.

Question justification- Research

In the first two questions the results were 100% outcome for both. this suggests the people that took the test from the different campuses are interested in sport and exercise. This is a good start for the servery as the participants are interested in sport. It suggests that they could potentially be healthy, which changes out hypothesis which was that many people that go to different campuses are not as healthy as the sports students that attend Gateshead Sports college.

The question 3 has a good range of answers, the result is once a week 7.7%, twice a week 21.1% and more than three times a week had a score of 69.2%. This suggests that the campuses that we took the servery from the majority of people exercise more than 3 times a week this could suggest that they either walk to college or go to a gym or have a team/club that they play for. For the other two percentages this implies that these people don’t have time to exercise or have other barriers which therefor mean that they can’t participate in sport more than three times a week, it could maybe mean that they are to lazy to participate in sport, even though they answered that they are interested in sport.

The 4th question doesn’t really apply to the people who answered that they take part in sport. To make this question better I should of had the option “i don’t participate in exercise regularly” to make this question better because then the people would be able to say why they don’t exercise regularly.

In question 5 the most common answer was that the individuals didn’t have enough time to exercise. This could be down to personal time, example time spent with family members and friends. These individuals who said that it was due to time this could suggest that they haven’t got enough time to get to a place that provides exercise such as a gym, it may suggest that they don’t have enough time for transport. To prevent the time management the individuals could make their own exercises up and maybe have a jog around their street.

In question 6 the percentage for enjoying exercise was 53.8% which is just over half, this is a positive because if they enjoy exercising it would give them more of a reason to get fit. The score for sometimes was 42.6% which is just under half. The positive of this question is that none of the people who took the survey answered no, this implies that the people from the different campuses do enjoy sport and exercise.

In question 7 the majority of the participants answered yes, to the question “Are you comfortable with exercising around other people?” This shows that the majority of the people can comfortably exercise around other people whether it would be in a gym or a leisure centre this could also mean that they are a part of a club or can be apart of a club because they are alright at socialising. However the other 14.5% suggest that they are shy and quiet as they answered no to the question. This suggest that they would rather train and exercise on their own, which is totally fine. But exercising on your own can be quite lonely plus it may not motivate you as much as a team could do. To overcome this the leisure centres could put on clubs and social clubs that involves sport.

For question 8 the majority of the people answered that they don’t go to the gym. I put this question in there to see if people go to the gym. To make this question better I should of asked if the participants are in a club as well as going/not going to the gym. Because that will then determine how many people enjoy the gym and what could the gyms do better. A barrier could be that there isn’t a gym close by to the people that are taking this survey. The people who answered that they go to the gym often or they have a membership is just under half.

Question 9 was to work out where abouts people live. This is vital information because we can then see if there is leisure centres, gyms and other exercise facilities available for these people. The majority of the people who took the survey live in Gateshead this is good because we know that there are many facilities available in Gateshead to go to the gym or join a club and it’s only a bus journey away. The joint second highest percentage to live in the survey was Sunderland and Newcastle because I am not familiar with these areas I would have to do research to find out what would be the easiest gym or leisure centre to get to in these areas.

For question 10 the individuals were asked if they had a healthy diet the highest percentage with 61.5% answered that they had a alright diet but could be better, this suggests that they dont have a balanced diet therefore this could mean that there is room for improvement. To make this better for the individuals they could have a personal diet that is planned around them this would also help with their exercise and health over all. The 30.8% of people answered that they do have a healthy diet this suggests that they have a healthy lifestyle this suggests that this percentage of people are apart of a club or have more exercise activities that they are apart of. The small percentage of the people that answered no that they didn’t have a healthy diet, this suggest that these types of people don’t have enough social time as they may be at work or working from home this links to one of the first questions when the majority of the individuals answered that they didn’t have enough time to exercise.

Potential barriers

Support network- people may not have the support to take part in exercise. For example people getting sponsors for the great north run is good support network. People may not have the support to go on

Lack of facilities- may not have any facilities in the community, this can be changed if people from the community set groups/lessons up that can help the rest of the community out.

Transport- may be not able to get to a gym or leisure centre. Special busses are put on to pick people up at their house that can’t afford to get a taxi.

Financial- people may have low paid jobs this suggests that they can’t pay for the right nutrition or diet plans. To overcome this people can put free events on at leisure centres such as food banks.

Health problems- people with various illnesses and problems may not be able to take part in exercise. To overcome this group sessions could be put on to make the people feel supported.

Disability- may stop people from involving themselves in exercise. To overcome this people have to adapt around them so they can get involved. http://popupgym.org.uk/
